Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Romance was not part of Nora Grey’s plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora’s not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can’t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.’

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

‘A fallen man. A forbidden love. A murderous secret.’

Set in Coldwater, Maine, Hush, Hush is the first in a series of four books written by Becca Fitzpatrick. It was first published in 2009 by Simon and Schuster and quickly shook the young-adult fantasy genre with its dark take on fallen angels and supernatural romance.

This book centres around high-schooler Nora Grey, who lives with her mother in a desolate farmhouse on the edge of town. Her father was murdered a year before the books begins. But like any other high-school student Nora seeks comfort in her best friend, Vee Sky, her hobby (writing for the school eZine) and working to keep on top of her grades. The final matter, however, is complicated when she is seated with her new biology partner, Patch, last name unknown. He is arrogant yet mysterious, and when he refuses to trade personal information for an easy biology assignment, Nora make it her mission to find out why he won’t divulge.

In the course of this decision, the unthinkable happens: he appears to reciprocate her interest. He knows things about her he really shouldn’t, and he wants to know more. However, whether this interest is borne from innocent curiosity, or something much more sinister, is a question that should be kept in mind.

Hush, Hush is an easy read – potentially a read that can be accomplished in one sitting. its simplicity in structure, dialogue and description, against its roller-coaster, all-inclusive plot, makes for an alluring find in the Teen section. The contents of this novel not only include supernatural phenomena, but also moments of romance, action and a criminal sub-plot that has piecing things together, clue by clue. And even then, the answer is something you would never expect.

If you’re looking to start a dark fantasy series, one which you can read under the covers, late at night, Hush, Hush might just be exactly what you need.
